Braves post 13-3 baseball victory over Maroons

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves played host to the Menominee Maroons in a district game Tuesday night. The Braves took the matchup 13-3 behind good pitching and a well rounded hitting attack.

The Braves loaded the bases right away to start the game and scored runs on back to back sacrifice flys by Noah Peterson and Issac Ketchum. The Braves also got RBI doubles by Braden Sundquist and Brennan Detige and RBI’s by Casey Alworden, Tyler Darmogray and Nate Young to give the Braves a 9-0 lead in the first inning.

The Braves attack continued in the second inning following a triple by Aedan Creten and Detige reaching on error. The Braves got back to back RBI singles by John Soderman and Tyler Darmogray to extend the Braves lead to 11-0.

“It was a good day for us out there as a team we hit the ball well, didn’t commit any errors and were aggressive with our base running,” Darmogray said.

The Maroons got on the board in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Landon Bardowski that brought Kaiden Calcari home to cut the Braves lead to 12-1.

“We gave up too many chances in the first inning we put ourself far behing against a good team you can’t do that and win games,” said Menominee coach John Jazz.

The Braves added on to the lead in the third inning after a double by Issac Ketchum. Casey Alworden hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 13-1.

“I was a little nervous in pregame, but we came out and got hits stole bases. Braden pitched well. We have to build on this momentum going forward,” said Gladstone coach Joe Darmogray.

The Maroons cut in to the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs on four hits in the inning against Gladstone’s Gavin Frossard, who came into the game in relief of Sundquist.

The Braves got a hit from every player in the batting order and Sundquist finished the day allowing only one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

“It was a good day. I was able to stay in command and throw strikes, and on offense we got hits up and down the order good day all around,” Sundquist said.

The Braves will face Manistique at 1 p.m. on Friday in district action, then Superior Central will play Newberry at 3 p.m. The winners of both games will play in the championship at 5 p.m. All games are in Gladstone.
