Indians mercy Gwinn

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Indians got back into the win column here Wednesday night, posting a 16-1 American Legion baseball victory in four innings over first-year entry Gwinn.

Gladstone, which snapped a five-game losing streak, did most of its scoring in the second and third frames.

“They have a new program,” said Gladstone manager Scott Kwarciany. “It was good for the kids to come out here and enjoy the game. Our goal was to give our second-tier players some playing time, and they got some good reps. This was good for team morale.”

Noah Peterson and Casey Alworden combined on a two-hitter.

Peterson, who threw three innings of no-hit ball, struck out six and walked none. Alworden whiffed three and walked two in relief.

“Noah threw strikes which is good,” said Kwarciany. “We’re proud of his effort. We have a lot of things to work on, but we’ll try to build on the positives.”

Alworden scored Gladstone’s first run on Peterson’s single to left field in the second. Peterson then scored on a wild pitch, and Travis Mack’s sacrifice fly to the shortstop gave the Indians a three-run cushion.

The Indians, taking advantage of four errors, scored 10 times in the third and ended the contest on Devin Frossard’s single to left-center in the fourth.

Carl Peterson scored Gwinn’s run on a bases-loaded walk to Tom Newhouse in its half of the fourth.

The Indians collected 10 hits and cashed in on 11 walks. Tyler Darmogray, Peterson and Frossard led the way with two apiece.

Peterson shined in centerfield in his final appearance for the Lightning, making a diving grab on a flyball by Peterson in the third among his three catches.

“A lot of us are young,” said Peterson, who plans to try out for the football team at Northern Michigan University this fall. “We learned a lot through this season. I think the team will improve a lot. I got a lot of motivation from our football coach Dion Brown (now deceased). He got me to where I am today.”

Brandon Palmer, who pitched 1 2/3 innings, absorbed the loss. He walked four and gave up five runs on four hits.

Gladstone played at Menominee Thursday and resumes at Niagara, Wis. Monday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
