Esky holds off Blues’ rally

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Legion baseball team held off a Marquette rally 12-10 Wednesday in Escanaba.

After scoring seven unanswered runs, the Blues scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut its deficit to 9-8 entering the sixth.

Despite gifting the Blues three runners with a walk and two hit batters, the Cubs’ Nick Kolich struck out the next two batters to exit the top of the inning.

Esky’s Jack McEvers was up first and reached on an error. After Bon LaChance drew a walk, Kolich’s fly double to center scored McEvers to make it 10-8.

Marquette’s Dakota Maki then earned the first out on a strikeout, but Esky’s Nick Chiu hit another fly double, allowing LaChance and Kolich to score and seal the game 12-10.

Chiu led the Cubs with five RBIs and three hits, and LaChance and Kolich each collected two RBIs. LaChance also notched two hits and Kolich one.

Kolich took the win in relief for the Cubs over two innings, allowing one hit, two runs (none earned) and two walks while fanning two. Parker Frappier spent the first five innings on the mound and struck out two while allowing 10 hits and seven runs (five earned).

Esky visits Menominee Sunday.
