Eskymos boys tennis earn win over Braves
ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos hosted the Gladstone Braves Wednesday afternoon for a pair of tennis matches.
With the small Gladstone squad for the year, the teams played two matches at No. 1 singles and doubles and No. 2 singles and doubles.
Also due to the small Gladstone roster, contests at No. 3 and No. 4 singles and doubles were considered forfeits, resulting in 7-1 and 8-0 wins for Escanaba.
Jackson Cousineau and Parker LaFond earned wins a No. 1 singles against Gladstone’s Chad Britton for Escanaba while Vinny Gindon and Andrew Lord earned No. 2 singles wins over Gideon Barron.
The sole Gladstone win of the day came at No. 1 doubles as Max Wilson and Sam Hedman took the win in the opening match with a third-set tiebreaker over Trevor Mathieson and David Romps.
Escanaba coach Tom Penegor noted the No. 1 doubles match — with its third-set tiebreaker — was the closest, and most entertaining, of the day.
He also mentioned the positive experience the pair of matches provided for both teams.
“It was good for both teams, I think, and the parents. They enjoy watching their kids play a varsity match against their rivals,” Penegor commented.
Gladstone heads to Menominee today while the Eskymos head up to see both Negaunee and Westwood before taking part in the Kingsford Invitational this weekend.
