Esky shuts out Redmen

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos earned a 15-0 shutout win via the mercy rule in the fourth inning over the Marquette Redman Wednesday afternoon in Escanaba.
The Esky win was led by Hunter Lancour’s efforts atop the mound as he pitched a four-inning no-hitter, only throwing 53 pitches for five strikeouts and two walks.
“It was nice at this point of the year to get Hunter an outing,” said Escanaba coach Scott Hanson. “Probably the best Hunter has looked all year, too. I thought his velocity was up — which, at this point of the year, usually velocity is going down.”
Coach Hanson added that Lancour will now get some time to rest before making his next start at the tail end of next week.
The Eskymos totaled nine hits in the four innings, with the winning run — scored by Scott Hiller — being batted in by Adam Willette.
“The bats haven’t been an issue for us,” noted coach Hanson. “We’ve been putting the bat on the ball. I think we had some bad luck earlier in the year where we were hitting a lot of balls at people, and a lot of those balls are dropping for us now.”
Ethan Jennings started for the Redmen and allowed 10 total runs, six earned, off of six hits with five walks.
Ashton Demboski came in during the second inning in relief. He gave up four hits and five earned runs on the mound with four walks.
Jennings and Demboski each had one strikeout.
For the Redmen, it has been an up and down season, indicated no better than through recent doubleheader outings said coach Derek Swajanen.
“We’re a team that one game we play really good. For example, Escanaba when we faced them in Marquette, horrible first game and come back and when the second game,” said Swajanen. “We were in Negaunee, horrible first game, almost come back and almost mercy them in the second game.”
In this game, there was several missed opportunities to keep the score close said Swajanen.
“In that first inning, we could have gotten out of that inning with eight pitches and not given up a run,” he said. “But, instead, we gave up four runners and two other runners on base all unearned. Same with the last inning.”
Marquette will host a doubleheader against the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils on Friday.
Escanaba continues a light schedule this week with single games against Menominee today then Manistique Friday night.
