Broncos split two DHs

CRYSTAL FALLS and NORWAY — The Bark River-Harris Broncos split a pair of doubleheaders Tuesday and Wednesday as they earned two wins (8-2, 19-2) against the Forest Park Trojans Tuesday in Crystal Falls and absorbed two losses against the Norway Knights (2-6, 5-7) Wednesday in Norway.

“We certainly battled, particularly on the pitching mound,” said Broncos coach Al Botwright of the Norway games. “Both our starting pitchers kept us in the ball game, and they really did some excellent work keeping our composure out there and throwing strikes and allowing us to get through some innings with those guys.

“As we had just had games yesterday, we were a little short-handed with the pitching staff. So, that was huge for us to not only stay in the game but eat up as many innings as they both did.”

Travis Mack pitched the first game against Norway and finished with four strikeouts, two walks, allowing 11 hits for six runs (4 earned).

Mason Bower pitched the first four innings of game two and had two struck out two with one walk. He gave up eight hits for six runs, five earned. Charlie Guenette closed the game for the Broncos and allowed one hit for one unearned run.

Bower also had a strong night in the batter’s box, knocking one over the left field fence for a two-run home run.

With runners on board in the sixth, Dominick Langtagne put a ball in play for a single to score Sam O’Connor and Guenette. The late-game runs weren’t quite enough to overcome the four-run deficit BR-H began the inning with.

As the Broncos rest for a few days now before taking on Gladstone on Monday, Botwright is looking at the positives from the Norway losses.

“I liked the way we kept fighting,” he said. “We had a big inning go against us in that first game early where we gave up four runs. Momentum was certainly all on Norway’s side. We kept fighting and kept putting good bats together, but we just couldn’t get one timely big timely hit to knock some guys in. We had opportunities in there, but we just didn’t get to cash them in. That was most certainly a positive.”
