Rapid River boys split
STEPHENSON and RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River boys basketball team split two single-point differential games, topping Carney-Nadeau 68-67 at home Monday and falling to Stephenson 37-36 Tuesday in Stephenson.
At Stephenson, the tale was told by the 22 turnovers given up by the Rockets in the first half alone. The Eagles capitalized, and Rapid River trailed by seven entering halftime.
“In the first half, we had 22 turnovers,” Rockets coach Hayden Hardwick said. “We didn’t handle their pressure very well. We went into halftime down 17-10. We made a good run at them in the second half, (but it wasn’t enough).”
At home Monday, the Rockets found themselves up at the half and held on against a Carney offensive onslaught.
“We had a pretty good first half,” Hardwick said. “We went into halftime up nine points. Then, in classic Carney fashion, they came out and started nailing 3-pointers. Nine 3s in the second half alone, so they kind of caught fire and forced us to switch up our defensive game plan a little bit. Eventually, we were able to pull it although we got outscored in the second half.
“I thought the seniors, without our point guard Rease Dawley, gave big minutes on Senior Night. Damyn Smith and Jaden McCarthy both played extremely well. Kody Goldi was big as well as Ian Sundling.”
Goldi had 18 at Stephenson and pulled down a double-double against Carney with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Sundling earned 19 against Carney, and McCarty notched 11.
Jerry Lee LaFord notched 19 points, Sam Salo earned 17 and Peyton Imhoff finished with 15.
