Turnovers doom BRH

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris girls experienced some difficulty against Kingsford’s full-court pressure defense here Monday night in a 52-40 basketball loss.

BR-H, which committed 26 turnovers in this non-conference contest, trailed 24-23 at halftime.

The Broncos took their only lead just seven seconds into the third quarter before the Flivvers responded with 13 unanswered points, gaining a 37-25 lead on a jump shot from top of the key by senior point guard Talia Wallis.

“I thought our full-court press was the key,” said Kingsford coach Jon Lorenzoni. “We wanted to take them out of their half-court offense, and I thought we did that. Overall, we did a real nice job.”

The Flivvers (4-5) led 40-29 after the third and extended their advantage to 46-29 on a pair of free throws by Wallis midway through the fourth.

BR-H pulled within 48-38 with two minutes remaining, but couldn’t get any closer.

“I don’t know why we were unable to handle their press,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “We had five guards on the floor most of the time. I thought we had our best ballhandlers out there. We told the girls to ‘go out and play at your pace.’ I don’t know why they were trying to rush things. I’m glad Kingsford came down here. We called them this morning, and they agreed to come over. We wanted to play good competition.”

Kingsford took a 14-8 lead on a 20-foot set shot by Wallis late in the opening frame.

The Broncos (6-5) shaved their deficit to 14-12 on a seven-foot set shot by sophomore Mackenzie Hoffmeyer early in the second in a game that stayed close through well into the third.

Senior guard Cara Zawacki led the Broncos with 15 points. Hoffmeyer added eight points, three assists and three steals.

Wallis scored 20, and senior Zoie Geronimi tallied nine for the Flivvers, who had 19 turnovers.

“Talia controlled the game for us,” said Lorenzoni. “She made good decisions and had a very nice overall game. We appreciate Bark River-Harris giving us the opportunity to come down here and play them. This was a good team win. Everybody contributed.”

BR-H hosts Munising Friday. Kingsford, which played at North Dickinson Tuesday, hosts West Iron County Monday.

“We’re going to mix up our starting lineup against Munising,” said Richer. “We just have to play better. We want the girls to have fun, but also play hard and cheer for their teammates. Our 2-3 zone was working real well. Only, we don’t do the boxing out, and we missed assignments on defense. When they got the 12-point lead, it was hard to come back from that, especially when we were having trouble scoring.”

The BR-H jayvees defeated Rapid River 49-28 in the preliminary game. Freshman Hope Varoni the Broncos with nine points, and senior Natalie Snay had eight for the Rockets (0-12), who host Stephenson Monday.
