Wolves roll past Mid Pen in opener

CARNEY — Friday night brought a successful season opener for the Carney-Nadeau Wolves girls basketball team as they defeated the Mid Peninsula Wolverines (1-1) 70-30 to begin their District and Regional Championship defenses in Carney.
Four girls — Grace Maule (22), Shae Linder (15), Tessa Wagner (13), who had a double-double with 14 total rebounds, and Kelsie Smith (10) — all hit double-digit scoring for the Wolves with Maule, Linder and Smith all setting new career game highs.
“It’s an awesome way to start the season,” said Wolves coach Ken Linder. “A good team win, really solid. Everybody really played well. I couldn’t be happier with the way we started.
After a close first quarter — that even saw Mid Pen grab the lead momentarily — ended 10-8 in favor of the Wolves, Carney opened up their offensive barrage in the second and did not let up until the final buzzer.
Despite the solid performance, coach Linder knows there are still some things the Wolves can tweak to perform even better throughout the remainder of the year.
“We’re young and still got some things we can get better at,” he said. “I mean, we shot the ball really well. They took Tessa away, and we got really open looks. We made them, which we need to do, but you ain’t going to get open looks like that against everybody.
“I think we have a high ceiling. I think we can really get better.”
Mid Pen knew coming into the game that they would be in for a challenge. Wolverines coach Phil Croasdell said postgame that the team met that challenge in the first quarter, but things slipped away after that.
“The first quarter is exactly what I thought we could do,” Croasdell said. “We did a good job on Tessa and kept their guards in check… But, after that — that was the problem with our defense — we had to stop the big girl but the guards might start hurting us, and then, they started hurting us. So, we went out on their guards, and they were still hurting us. They just shot phenomenal.”
Rachel Johnson netted 11 for Mid Pen to lead the team in scoring while Landry Koski led in rebounds with eight total.
Croasdell also noted the performances of Mary McNally — who had three blocks and six points — and Claire VanDamme, the eighth-grader who got four points on the night, for their jobs facing off against Carney’s Tessa Wagner.
Up next for the Wolves is another home contest as the Forest Park Trojans visit Carney on Tuesday.
Mid Pen has a 17-day break before playing Big Bay de Noc in Garden Corners.
