MANISTIQUE — The Manistique girls earned their first basketball victory this season, topping the Gwinn Modeltowners 40-28 here Monday night.

Jenaya Reque scored 12 points for the Emeralds, who improved to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-Peninsula Conference.

“I’m really proud of our girls tonight,” said Emeralds’ coach Jenna Nagy. “They came in and played a tough, physical game. We took advantage of our height and were able to capitalize on their foul trouble.”

The Emeralds led 18-11 at halftime.

Jordana Hardy hit 13 points, and Lena Pleaugh added 10 for the Modeltowners (0-4 overall, 0-2 M-PC), who will now waitgo on break until they host Munising Jan. 4.

“Gwinn has an aggressive team, and I was really proud of the girls for not letting that rattle them,” said Nagy. “They played good defense and made their free throws down the stretch.”

Manistique, which also won the jayvee game 21-20, visits Mackinaw City tonight.
