ST. NICHOLAS — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves earned a 3-1 (30-28, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20) win over the Mid Peninsula Wolverines Thursday night in St. Nicholas.

“All the sets were pretty close tonight,” Wolves coach Steve Kedsch said. “We haven’t been on the court in almost two weeks, so we were a little rusty. I thought the kids hustled and really played well here tonight.”

For the Wolverines (3-2), it was the best they’ve played this season, said coach Emily Kayser.

“It was a battle tonight. It was hard-fought. Unfortunately, we did lose,” said Kayser. “But, this is the best we’ve looked all season. We were passing the ball well and distributing it well tonight. It came down to a couple little mistakes, but it’s a game we’re not going to hang our heads on.

“It was a great game. There was nothing to be disappointed about. They looked great tonight, and I was proud of them.”

The third set win, Kayser noted, was attributed to jumping to an early lead.

“We jumped to it, and we told the girls we needed to win this one or else we’re going home,” she said.

Mackenzie Walcher led the Wolves (9-4-2) in aces with six, and Malorie Baumler had a decisive night at the net with 16 kills. Samantha Kedsch notched 30 assists, and Walcher also led in digs with 21.

“I thought Malorie Baumler did a really good job hitting tonight,” coach Kedsch said. “Hailey DeGrave is starting to come into her own at the net.”

Kora Prater led Mid Pen in digs with 28, Alexa Harring in aces with six, Madie VanDamme in assists with 11 and Landry Koski in kills with six.

The Wolverines — who won the JV match 2-0 (25-5, 25-9) will host Stephenson Oct. 5, and Carney travels to Munising.
