Big Bay ties, tops Bobcats
GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears hosted a doubleheader matchup for soccer and volleyball against the Munising Baptist Bobcats Thursday in Garden Corners.
They started the night out on the soccer field, where both teams fought hard against each other and ended in a 2-2 draw.
Big Bay took the lead in the first half from a single goal by Cam Miller.
In the second half, a few mistakes by Big Bay led to Munising tying the game at 2 to 2. Big Bay de Noc had their chances in the second half but couldn’t bury a third goal to take the lead.
“Nothing was going our way,” said Big Bay coach Alex Ranguette. “This was one of the most exciting matchups I have ever been a part of. The Black Bears and the Bobcats are both top in their league and definitely came to play tonight.”
Next up, the Black Bears and Bobcats headed to the gym for an NLL Volleyball matchup where the Black Bears won in four sets (27-29, 25-17, 25-15, 25-14).
In the first set, Big Bay had the lead but fell behind and lost 29-27
“I think that really shook the girls,” Coach Angie Paulson stated. “They were playing really strong, and we made some substitutions, and as soon as that lead started to slip they got into their heads. I was worried we wouldn’t be able to pull out of it, but thankfully we did.
“Alix had a killer night with hitting. We’ve been working on her form when hitting and also tweaking some things with her serve, and it really showed tonight. We needed those hard hits to bring our momentum back up. Katelyn DeKeyser always carries us with her serves too. She was finding the holes and making some quick points,” Paulson continued. “We had a rough matchup at Maplewood on Tuesday, so I think I can say for everyone that it felt really good to go home with a win tonight.”
Big Bay de Noc will host Hannahville next Tuesday for a soccer/volleyball matchup.
