Wolverines hold off Rockets’ rally

ST. NICHOLAS — It was a night of momentum swings between the Mid Peninsula Wolverines and Rapid River Rockets Thursday night as the Wolverines ended the night on top 3-1 (25-15, 12-25, 26-24, 25-15) in St. Nicholas.
“It was definitely overall a team win,” said Wolverines coach Emily Kayser. “Everyone hit the stat book tonight, and they’re doing their roles.”
Mid Pen and Rapid exchanged wins in the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-12, but it was the third set where the Wolverines clawed their way to have the 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth set.
Down 16-5, Mid Pen went on a seven-point run helmed by Landry Koski to close the deficit to four.
Rapid River answered back, though, with several small punches of points until they led 24-20.
The Wolverines, again with Koski serving, went on another run to take the set win 26-24. The set was sealed with an ace by Koski followed by a Josie Hemminger block at the net.
Mid Pen took set four 25-15.
“That second set, we were a little on the slower side, and we lost our communication,” Kayser said. “Once we started communicating again, we were fine.
“We dug ourselves out of an incredible hole. That’s just a big old pat on the back to all the girls for not giving up. That was a huge lead that Rapid River had, and the girls did not give up on that. The girls wanted it, so I’m very proud of them for that.”
Kayser also lauded the job her seniors have done as team leaders.
“Landry (Koski), Shae (Lampinen) and Patty (Salmi); they are doing their roles,” she said. “Landry is doing a phenomenal job at the net for us, and she’s working on her jump serve this season. So, I hope that develops well for us later in the season.”
Koski led Mid Pen in kills with 12 and earned two blocks along with Josie Hemminger — who led the team in aces with nine.
Kora Prater had nine digs, while the remaining Wolverines all had at least two digs apiece.
Leading the team in assists was Shae Lampinen with 10.
For Rapid River, coach Kristy Kerstner was happy with how the Rockets came alive through the first and second sets.
“Halfway through the first set, the girls really started coming alive. They did good,” said Kerstner. “The second set was phenomenal. They opened up, and they came alive. Everything that we’ve been wanting, that’s what happened, that’s what they did. They fought until the end. They played hard. They played good.”
After going up in the third set, Kerstner said the Rockets ran low on fuel.
“The third set, we had the lead again, (and) then we started losing that,” she said. “We kind of ran out of power (then) the fourth set. We were just a little crazy.”
Kerstner mentioned both Gabby Moss at the net and Addie Christoff and Gracie Stemick serving as having good nights.
“Gabby’s our strong hitter at the night, our strong middle, she always has been,” she said. “Addie and Gracie both had really good service runs. Our serving was much better until the fourth set.”
Moss had five digs and two blocks for the Rockets to lead those stats while Christoff had five kills and Emma Sundling 13 assists on the night.
The Rockets will travel to Stephenson Monday while the Wolverines, which won the JV match 2-1, readies for a Monday game against Carney-Nadeau.
