Braves’ girls earn 2 wins
GWINN and IRON RIVER — The last two days were fruitful for the Gladstone Braves girls’ tennis team.
On Thursday, they defeated the West Iron County Wykons 7-1 in Ironwood while they swept the Gwinn Modeltowners 8-0 Wednesday in Gwinn.
“Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of today’s match versus West Iron County,” said Braves coach Ryan Barron. “Our girls had a slow start, which was worrisome but finished strong when it mattered the most.”
Barron added the recent success for Gladstone has been “like the girls hit a reset button.”
“It shows the mental toughness in this group,” he said. “I always preach to them not to dwell on what happened but look forward to what they can change. The most important shot in tennis is the next one. I’m very proud of how these girls fought to the bitter end. We still have much to improve on, but I’m pleased with the direction we are headed.”
Several of the matches featured long, three-set fights.
Addie Trombley won (0-6, 6-4, 10-5) at No. 1 singles over Kali Applin, while Rachel Krouth and Magie Buckley (6-7, 6-0, 10-1), Reese Herioux and Sophia Rosa (4-6, 6-1, 10-7) and Aliana Martinez and Charlotte Hanson (1-6, 6-1, 12-10) won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles.
Tia Schone (No. 3) and Samara Sanville (No. 4) also picked up wins in singles action while the No. 1 duo of Emma Wagner and Montgomery Pepin picked up a doubles victory.
The victory against Gwinn featured three shutout wins at No. 1 (Emma Wagner, Alesha Marenger), No. 3 (Sophia Rosa, Reese Herioux) and No. 4 (Aliana Martinez, Charlotte Hanson) doubles with the Braves’ pairs copping all of their sets 6-0.
Rachel Krouth and Maggie Buckley — No. 2 doubles — won their first set 6-0 and took the second 6-1, almost achieving the same feat.
In singles, Addie Trombley (No. 1), Tia Schone (No.2 ), Montgomery Pepin (No. 3) and Samara Sanville (No. 4) each took their matches, as well.
“It was a beautiful night to play tennis,” said Barron. “All of the girls showed improvement today. I tell the girls, pick one thing to improve on each practice/match, and by the end of the season, they will be well-rounded players.”
Barron added his excitement for what lies ahead for the Gladstone team while giving props to Trombley for her performance against Gwinn’s Lily Kerry.
“I’m looking forward to see what happens once the tournaments come around,” he said. “I’m extremely proud of the mental toughness that Addie showed in her matchup versus Lily. She could have easily given up after dropping the first set. But she persevered and took it one shot at a time. After she won the second set, I knew the tides had turned, and she powered through that third set to get the victory.”
Trombley echoed Barron’s sentiment of pushing through.
“My first set wasn’t going too good,” Trombley said. “But, then I knew I had to keep pushing and doing my best. I ended up coming out with the win after a long match which felt really good.”
