Broncos win in straight sets
HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos cruised through the first two sets, then were tested in the third during a 3-0 (25-5, 25-12, 25-21) volleyball triumph over the Menominee Maroons here Tuesday night.
Senior Alaska Peterson opened with a 12-point service run, and junior Carley Varoni added an eight-point run in the first set of the Broncos’ home opener.
“Alaska had an amazing service run,” said BR-H coach Jen Ives. “That set the tempo and definitely got the momentum pointed in our direction.”
BR-H led 22-5 following a Menominee hitting error in the second set prior to a mild comeback by the Maroons.
The Broncos appeared to be in control again in the third, taking a 17-7 advantage on a kill by senior Aspen Fredrick before the Maroons began to make things interesting in their season debut.
“We started playing well in the third set,” said Menominee coach Sara Betzinger. “Our passing got better, and we started setting up in our offense. Our serving also got better, and we started sending the ball further into their side. We had a lot of first-match jitters. Our communication improved, but we have a long way to go. The girls are willing to work. I think we have something to build on.”
Menominee climbed within 21-19 on a kill by Haley Bouty.
BR-H then extended its lead to 23-19 on a kill by senior Tressa Ives.
The Maroons again pulled within two points (23-21) on a kill by Kayla Drifka before another kill by Tressa Ives gave the Broncos a sideout and three-point cushion.
The match then ended on a passing miscue.
“Much to Menominee’s credit, they put up a fight in the third set,” said coach Ives. “I think we backed off a little and started to relax. We didn’t play with the same intensity as we did in the first two sets. Although, they played well. We really practiced with our communication, and it was good in the first two sets. When our communication is good, it tends to raise our energy level.”
Varoni hit eight aces, collected five kills and two blocks and had 12 assists. Fredrick added four aces, seven kills and two blocks. Peterson finished with four aces and 10 assists, and Cara Zawacki had seven kills.
“Cara had a good night,” said coach Ives. “She found the line well.”
Bouty had eight assists, and Drifka added seven for the Maroons, who visit Gladstone Thursday.
The Broncos, who also won the JV match (25-7, 25-11), head to Carney-Nadeau Monday.
