Servant, Larson break Braves track records

NEGAUNEE — A pair of Gladstone seniors enjoyed record-setting days during the 38th Annual Negaunee Lions Club Invitational track meet here Friday.

Blake Servant set a school and meet record in discus at 157 feet, 1 1/2 inches, approximately four feet more than the previous school-best by Jared Vuksan in 2013. He added a meet record in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.45 seconds and victories in the 300s (42.06) and long jump with a personal-best leap of 20-2 on this seasonably mild day.

“Setting the school record in discus was my ultimate goal,” said Servant. “It takes a lot of practice, and I put a lot of time into that. I threw nearly every day (during the off-season), and the practice paid off.”

The Marquette boys were crowned champions with 131 points. They were followed by defending champ Gladstone 81 1/2 and Kingsford 55.

Marquette’s girls also won with 86, followed by two-time defending champion Negaunee 80 and Escanaba 78

Braves’ senior Ahna Larson won the girls’ 300 hurdles in a school-record 47.13, topping the previous best (47.71) by Hayley Ford in 2005. She also took the 100s (16.99) and long jump (16-0).

“I just powered through it (300 hurdles),” she said. “I felt a little tired, but I knew I had to keep going. I felt great at the start. Thank God the weather was great.

“I looked at the clock. It read 42 seconds, and I still had to get over the last hurdle. Then, I looked at the clock again, and it was in the 46s as I was getting ready to finish. I was super excited when I found out I had the record.”

Larson, who also placed fourth in the open 100, was selected the meet’s Most Valuable Athlete for the girls with Servant earning MVA honors among the boys.

Servant had been disqualified in the 110 hurdles after his trailing leg clipped a hurdle. Meet officials, however, later determined he didn’t interfere with other runners and reversed their decision.

“I was pretty disappointed at first,” said Servant. “I told the officials that I didn’t do it on purpose. With my trailing leg, I always clip the hurdles, and I think they may have been mistaken by that.”

Esky senior Derek Douglas copped the 800 in a meet-record 2:02.02 and led off the second-place 3200 relay with a 1:59 split.

“I got a little tired in the end of the 800,” he said. “Getting a 1:59 split in the 3200 relay gave the feeling I had a shot at the school record. It’s a little bittersweet, but I’m glad I got the meet record. It feels pretty good to do that. I had my eyes on this meet for a while.”

Douglas also helped the Eskymos take third in the 1600 relay.

“I told the guys we weren’t saving ourselves for this meet and can’t be upset about not getting school records at this time,” said Esky coach Scott Dykema. “We’ve been running hard for five days in a row. Right now, we’re running for the U.P. (Division 1) Finals.”

Marquette senior Kameron Karp captured the 100 (12.38) and 200 (23.38) and helped the winning 400 relay set a school record (44.73).

“I’m really happy with how our guys performed,” said Marquette coach Kyle Detmers. “Kameron had a real good day, and the team had a good day all-around. With the (D-1) regional coming up on Thursday, we have a lot of work to do.”

Gladstone senior Ethan Milam won high jump (6-4), and Esky senior Brodey Bevins took pole vault (11-0).

“We had some good performances,” said Gladstone coach Gary Whitmer. “We’re very happy for Blake. I’m thankful Kyle helped us get everything straightened out in the 110 hurdles. I thought Drew (Hughes) did awesome in the 1600 and 3200. He ran PRs in both races (4:43.01 and 10:16.05). This was the first time Lucas (Hughes) did the 400, and he ran a nice time.”

Marquette sophomore Beau Truckey won the girls’ 100 (12.82), 200 (26.96), helped the Redettes establish a meet record in the 400 relay (52.37) while anchoring both winning sprint relays.

“It was exciting to get the meet record,” she said. “Our handoffs went well in both relays, definitely our best ones so far. This is way better than running in the cold weather.”

Negaunee junior Alyssa Hill was a double-winner, taking shot put (35-6) and discus (113-10).

“Alyssa has been throwing fabulous this year, and our sophomore Eliana Juchemich was right behind her in shot (31-8 1/2),” said Negaunee coach Vickie Paupore. “Our field events did real well, and Raquel Carlson performed well in pole vault, high jump and long jump. Our younger girls are stepping up.”

Esky junior Ciara Ostrenga captured the 400 (1:03.05) and helped the winning 1600 and 3200 relays.

“I’m happy with my time in the 400 for today,” she said. “I just want to score some points and help our team. All the teams here are good. It was good to get this meet in because a lot of the teams we were competing with are in our regional.”

Esky senior Anna Smith and Marquette sophomore Julia Ott shared first in high jump (4-11).

Gladstone coach Jim Murtha was happy with the Braves’ overall performance.

“Ahna obviously had an outstanding day,” he said. “Jamisyn (Bergeron) has been working on her starts and form and had an excellent day in the sprints, and Emma Wagner is coming along in high jump.
