Esky outpaces Flivvers
ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos pounced on several opportunities in an 11-2 baseball victory over the Kingsford Flivvers here Tuesday night.
Esky scored six times in the sixth inning of this Great Northern Conference contest, taking advantage of four errors and two walks.
“It was kind of a weird game,” said Esky coach Scott Hanson. “Although, I thought Riley Lamb pitched the best game of his career. Riley pitched only one inning in his last two starts. Hopefully, this was a confidence builder for him.”
Kingsford, which had won seven straight, was trailing 5-2 when it threatened in its half of the sixth.
Lamb, however, worked out of the jam and forced the Flivvers to leave the bases loaded.
“It wasn’t for a lack of baserunners,” said Kingsford Matt LaLonde. “We had our chances but left nine on the bases. Then, we committed two errors, and their first two hitters got on base (in the sixth). As a pitcher, that’s a lot to overcome. That made things harder for him and easier for them. What hurts even more is this was a conference game.”
Ben Johnson scored Esky’s sixth run on a throwing error, and Trent Lawson made it 7-2 on a fielding error.
Nick LaFave added an RBI single to leftfield. Jared Hanson’s single to left raised the count to 9-2, and Hunter Lancour’s two-run double to right concluded the scoring.
Kingsford scored both of its runs in the second.
Esky got a run back in its half of the second, then scored four times in the fourth for its three-run cushion.
Lancour’s single tied the score, and Collin Arnt’s two-run single gave the Eskymos a 4-2 lead.
“We weren’t out of it,” said LaLonde. “We had the bases loaded (in the sixth) and the right part of the order coming up. Our goal is to limit ourselves to two errors a game, and lately, we had been doing that. We also have to give Escanaba credit. They have a good team.”
The Eskymos (17-5 overall, 6-2 GNC) finished with six hits and at least nine stolen bases. Lancour finished with two hits and four RBIs. Arnt added two hits and two RBIs. Bryant Maki swiped three bases, and three others had two each.
Carter Kreski had two of Kingsford’s five hits.
The teams combined for 11 errors, including seven by the Flivvers (10-5 overall).
Lamb worked six innings and struck out four, allowing two runs on four hits. Reliever Brett Schlenvogt gave up a hit in the seventh.
Andrew Paupore, who pitched 5 1/3 innings, absorbed the loss. He fanned four and gave up eight runs on three hits. Riley Juneau threw 2/3 inning in relief.
“He (Paupore) moves the ball around a lot and mixes it up,” said coach Hanson. “We’ve had some real good battles with him over the years. We made some good plays. Tyler made a diving catch for a double play in center. Trent made a play on an infield fly. At first, I thought Riley caught it. I was afraid maybe they were going to collide, which would have been disastrous. Also, Jared stole third on his own (in the fourth inning), which also turned out to be a big play.”
Esky made all of its errors in the first two innings.
“The number of errors has been higher for most teams, and I don’t think it’s due to COVID,” said coach Hanson. “I think it’s due to lack of practice time due to the weather. We finish our regular season next week. Hopefully, we can work and improve on that before (Division 2) districts.”
Esky makes its final home appearance against Norway Thursday. Kingsford hosts Iron Mountain Thursday.
