MUNISING — The Superior Central Cougars boys track and field team saw a record-setting performance in the 4×100 relay during the Munising Lions Invitational track meet Friday evening.

The team of Zach Frusti (11th grade), Mathew McLaury (12), James Maki (12) and Clayton Collier (12) ran a 47.27-second race to take first place in the meet.

“These boys were determined from the start,” said Cougars track coach Sam Eggleston. “The very first time they practiced it on our dirt track at Superior Central, they knew they had what it was going to take to set the record. They practiced handoffs in the hallways with taped-off exchange zones and worked every aspect of their race in order to get their time down.”

Their splits were Frusti on the first leg: 12.08 seconds; McLaury: 11.89 seconds, Maki: 11.61 seconds; and Collier: 11.69 seconds.

The previous record was set in 1992 by the team of Jim Saberniak, Keel Stine, Johnny Wilson and Greg Mannisto.

“There’s a reason that record has stood for 29 years,” added Eggleston. “The Cougars who set it in 1992 were blazing fast.

“Records are made to be broken, and it was great to see these four boys set a goal and then work their tails off in order to get it. I am immensely proud of them, especially since we haven’t had a boys track team at Superior Central since 2017. This is the first year these four boys have ever run together, and I’m sure glad they did. It was quite the accomplishment to witness.”
