Rockets top Mid Pen in SF
MUNISING — The Rapid River girls’ picked up their third basketball victory, their second over Mid Peninsula this season, as they eliminated the Wolverines 49-29 in a Division 4 district basketball opener here Wednesday night.
Rapid River (3-13) return to Munising to face the host Mustangs (7-7) in Friday’s championship game Friday at 7 p.m. The Wolverines finished 9-8.
The Rockets’ C.C. Pilon limited Mid Pen’s Daisy Englund to three of her nine points in the first half.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Rockets’ coach Scott Goodacre. “We forced them to come out of to come out in man in the second half, which opened up our post play. We had things we could have done a little better on the offensive side, but it was a great team effort.”
Rapid River led 10-6 after the first quarter and 25-11 at halftime.
“In the first half, I thought we did a great job on (Natalie) Belanger,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “We held her to two points in the first half, but they hit their shots. We hit only 2-of-20 shots in the first half, and they were 6-of-9 in the second quarter. We just couldn’t get untracked. No one could find the hole tonight, although the girls played hard. They left it all on the floor. Daisy had a great career. It was tough to end it that way.”
Belanger finished with 17 points. Emily Goodacre hit 13, and Shania Poore had 10 for the Rockets, who hit 21-of-55 field goals and committed eight turnovers.
Landry Koski scored 10 for the Wolverines.
“It was a tough one,” said Croasdell. “Both teams showed up to play. We just didn’t hit our shots.”
