Esky girls double up Emeralds
ESCANABA — The fifth-ranked Escanaba girls went with a completely different starting lineup here Tuesday night in a 78-39 basketball rout of Manistique.
Esky (8-4) led 23-13 after the first quarter of the non-conference outing.
“We didn’t start any of our regulars,” said Esky coach Mike Beveridge. “I didn’t tell the girls who was starting until seven minutes before the game, and they were happy to see the others get a chance to start. I just wanted to reward them for all their hard work. They appreciated it and had a lot of fun. It was just a good effort by our team, and all the girls played well.”
Nicole Kamin scored 31 points. Mari Bink added 15, and Carney Salo had 12.
“Nicole had 14 points in the first quarter,” said Beveridge. “She took control from the start and got us going.”
The Emeralds knew it was going to be a challenge.
“We went in it knowing we were facing a big battle,” said Manistique coach Jenna Bradshaw. “Esky has a very good team. Kamin is a great player and was fun to watch.
Bradshaw, regardless of the final score, said there were some positives to take away from the game.
“I saw good transition looks and second-chance shots. My forwards did great on the boards, and Brooke St. John was a monster in the paint. It was a fantastic game for her.”
St. John led the Emeralds (3-11) with 23 points.
Esky, which also won the jayvee game, hosts Kingsford Thursday.
Manistique hosts Pickford Friday.
