Menominee at Carney-Nadeau

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau boys basketball team couldn’t completely handle the pressure, falling 65-53 to Menominee Thursday in Carney.

“We played Kingsford on Tuesday (63-55 loss), and we knew (Menominee) beat them handily,” Wolves coach Paul Polfus said. “I thought we did a good job for three quarters.”

The Wolves trailed just 43-40 entering the fourth quarter, but the Maroons’ pressure started to wear.

“We could have maybe handled their pressure a little better,” Polfus said. “We had some unforced turnover-type things.”

The Maroons kept adding to their lead in the fourth, outscoring the Wolves 22-13 to seal the game.

“I was happy with how our kids played,” Polfus said. “We played well. We had a tough fourth quarter. We missed some shots, and they got out and ran. It’s all part of the game.”

Jerry Lee LaFord led the Wolves with 17 points. He was followed by Beau Koffman with 16 points and six rebounds, and Brayden Kakuk with 11 points.

“LaFord and Koffman along with Kakuk had good games for us, and they handled that pressure well,” Polfus said.

The Maroons were led by Cooper Conway with a double-double, 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Aidan Bellisle followed with 18, and Brady Schultz collected 13.

Carney-Nadeau, which lost the JV game, hosts Stephenson Saturday.

Mid Peninsula at Republic-Michigamme

REPUBLIC — The Mid Peninsula boys basketball team executed better in its second game against Republic-Michigamme, but it still wasn’t enough. The Hawks topped the Wolverines 47-25 Thursday at Republic.

“We executed the way I’d like to see us execute in the first half,” Mid Pen coach Mark Branstrom said. “We were looking pretty decent compared to the last time we’d played.”

That execution stalled in the second half.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well in the second half,” Branstrom said. “They (also) hit all their 3’s in the fourth quarter. That was the difference, and that was the separation.”

The Wolverines were led by A.J. Richmond with 8 points.

Logan Hanninen and Derek Koski led the Hawks with 12 points apiece.

Mid Pen hosts North Dickinson Thursday.

Girls

Mid Peninsula at Republic-Michigamme

REPUBLIC — There were two firsts for the Mid Peninsula girls basketball team in Republic Thursday, a 36-point second quarter and a career-high of 25 points for Daisy Englund.

Bolstered by both, the Wolverines won 71-42 against the Republic-Michigamme Hawks.

“North Dickinson was a tough game last night,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “The girls were tired. (But) once they got loosened up a bit, it went well.”

While Republic led after the first quarter, 9-7, Mid Pen went on to have a record-breaking 36 points in the second quarter to lead 43-22 at the half.

“Daisy threw up 20 (points) in the second quarter,” said Croasdell. “She hit some threes and lit right up. Shae (Lampinen) hit some 3’s as well. We had eight of our 3’s in that quarter.

“We shot lights-out in the second quarter.”

While the Wolverines scored well, Croasdell said it wasn’t because Republic isn’t a talented team.

“Republic isn’t a pushover,” he said. “They hit some pretty tough shots and were making them.”

The magnitude of the performance isn’t lost on Croasdell, either.

“That was a big one,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve seen that for our team before.”

Englund also had ten rebounds in her career-high-scoring game. Landry Koski had 12.

“The girls all played well together and communicated,” said Croasdell. “It was just a good overall team win.”

The Wolverines host Carney-Nadeau Wolves on Monday.

Wrestling

MENOMINEE — The Escanaba and Gladstone wrestlers have been going down to the wire all season.

That again held true here Wednesday night as Esky’s Jarret Olsen pinned Peter Noblet 3 1/2 minutes into the 215-pound match to secure a 48-36 victory over the Braves.

“It has been too close for comfort, that’s for sure,” said Esky coach Jeff Wright. “It’s never going to be boring when we wrestle against Gladstone. That was definitely a huge match. Jarret lost his two previous matches to Peter. Our seniors definitely carried us in the middle weights.”

This marked Esky’s third narrow victory over Gladstone this season. The Eskymos then blanked Menominee 69-0. The Braves also beat the Maroons 66-12.

Esky took a 42-30 lead when Kahler Geyer (171) pinned Blake Servant at 1:22.

The Braves closed within 42-36 after Cole Potier (189) pinned Scott Pendergraft in 90 seconds.

Gladstone led 30-6 before Trenton Turchin pinned Logan Cox 3:56 into the 135 bout to trim Esky’s deficit to 30-12.

“That was a big win because we needed to have Collin (Arnt) moved up,” said Wright. “That definitely gave us momentum, which was great to see.”

Arnt (140) pinned Brennan Detiege in 45 seconds, and Tyler Lawson pinned Owen Mattonen at 57 seconds to trim Esky’s deficit to 30-24.

The Eskymos went ahead 36-30 by taking forfeits in the next two weight classes.
