Broncos grapplers earn regional title
HARRIS — It didn’t take long for the Bark River-Harris wrestlers to wrap up their first Division 4 team regional wrestling title here Wednesday, needing just an hour to post 72-12 victories over shorthanded Westwood and Pellston, a third-year program.
The victory sends BR-H to the state quarterfinals for the first time in the program’s 10-year history to face Whittemore-Prescott in Kalamazoo Tuesday.
“We had a pretty good night,” said BR-H coach Joe Racicot. “We were able to rotate every kid onto the mat. It’s unfortunate that Rogers City couldn’t make up here (due to Covid-19) and Westwood was missing a couple kids. Although, we had some good matches tonight.”
Junior Avry Corrigan got the most mat time for the Broncos, pinning Westwood’s Lindsey Williams in 72 seconds and Pellston’s Waasmowin Craven in 4:23 at 112 pounds.
BR-H senior Tyler Racicot (171) opened by pinning Westwood’s Luke Vidlund in three minutes, 15 seconds. Sophomore Drew Allgeyer (189) then pinned Aiden Harper at 1:41.
“This is awesome,” said Tyler. “It’s an amazing experience to be part of this team. We work hard every day in practice to make everyone better, and it pays off.”
The Patriots got on the board in the 125-pound as senior Alana Nuorala pinned BR-H sophomore Josh Riley in 3:21. Davin Collins (140) then pinned Melody Racicot in 32 seconds.
“Alana and Daven (Collins) gave us a lot of excitement,” said Westwood coach Dan Carlson. “She’s strong. She can come back. As a coach, you always want to see your kids move on. Unfortunately, Alana didn’t make weight for the individual district and had her wisdom teeth taken out, and wrestled in only a few meets. I suspect she would have done well. She had an excellent match tonight.”
Nuorala trailed 5-0 before gaining momentum on a reversal and near fall and setting the stage for her match-clinching pin.
“Josh put up one heck of a good battle,” said coach Racicot. “We can always count on him for stout wrestling. He’s a good battler but rolled into a bad situation. Alana made it to the individual regionals in her freshman year. She’s a very strong competitor. I have a lot of respect for that girl.”
Against Pellston, the Broncos took the first two weight classes by forfeit before Jacob Wandahsega (285) got pinned by Aiden Klungle in 1:53.
Elliot Corrigan (125) gave BR-H a 36-6 cushion by pinning Matt Chiles at 3:15, and Dillon Raab (140) pinned Hunter Sonnenberg in 47 seconds for an insurmountable 48-12 advantage.
“This was a learning experience for sure,” said Pellston coach Ken Crawford. “It’s such a process working with a young team, but we’re doing good for a young team. It was exciting to be in our first regional. Hopefully, we can put something together and do something a little better. We have no seniors on this team. I’m proud of these young guys. We’re heading in the right direction.”
