Rockets eclipse Newberry
RAPID RIVER — Bryce Lundquist ran for four touchdowns here Thursday night, helping the Rapid River Rockets post a 48-12 eight-player football victory over the Newberry Indians.
Lundquist scored on a pair of one-yard runs in the first quarter, giving the Rockets a 16-0 lead.
Newberry climbed within 16-12 by scoring twice in the second stanza with its second TD coming on an interception returned.
“It was a close ball game,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “They got the momentum at that point. Fortunately, our guys settled down. Our line opened some seams and Bryce did a nice job keeping his legs moving. Dave Lundquist and Jack Smith (assistant coaches) called a nice offensive game. Our defensive coaches also called a nice game.”
The Rockets responded, gaining a 22-12 cushion on Ishmael Hernandez’s 10-yard run with four minutes, 33 seconds left in the second.
Lundquist then scored for the third time on a 12-yard run for a 28-12 advantage 16 seconds before halftime.
The Rockets extended their lead to 34-12 on an eight-yard run by Griffin Flath with 7:59 left in the third.
Bryce Lundquist added another one-yard TD run and Blake Lundquist ended the scoring on a 43-yard pass to Carter Johnson.
Flath rushed for 210 yards on 32 carries. Hernandez added 79 in 12 attempts and Bryce Lundquist ran seven times for 20 and hit 7-of-10 passes for 197.
“Mason Kudlick went out with a hamstring/hip flexor injury which took away some of our speed,” said Ostrenga. “Mason had a couple nice runs.”
Defensively, Parker Dausey and Damyn Smith had quarterback sacks. Max Lenaker and Evan Horwitz each intercepted a pass and Kudlick recorded five tackles before his injury early in the second frame.
“Our defense did a lot of gang tackling,” said Ostrenga. “We had to scramble, but had an excellent overall effort.”
The Rockets (3-1) host top-ranked and defending (Division 1) state champ Pickford Oct. 16.
