HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos chewed up plenty of real estate here Friday in a 43-12 football triumph over the Norway Knights.
BR-H rushed for 326 of its 333 yards and all six of its touchdowns in this WestPAC Conference Iron Division match-up on Parents’ Night.
Both of our fullbacks ran real well, and our line blocked well,” said BR-H coach Al Stenberg. “Right to left, we have all seniors on our line. We’re basically the same team as last year. A lot of guys got to touch the ball, which is good.”
Junior Trevor Lippens led the way with 151 yards on 17 carries, and senior Aiden Johnson added 98 in 13 attempts in the Broncos’ lone regular-season home appearance.
The Broncos, who improved to 1-2 overall after their Iron Division opener, needed just six plays to march 51 yards in their opening drive.
Lippens ended that drive on a 15-yard run through the middle for an 8-0 lead.
Johnson raised the count to 14-0 on a 14-yard burst up the middle with 87 seconds left in the opening frame.
Lippens, who gained 146 yards in the first half, made it 22-0 on an 11-yard run through the left side with 9:53 left in the second quarter.
Senior quarterback Nick Javurek scored on a four-yard keeper for a 30-0 cushion with 2:20 remaining in the second, and Lippens added a 12-yard TD dash around left end for a 37-0 advantage 30 seconds before halftime.
Lippens’ third score was set up on a fumble recovery on the Norway 20-yard line by senior Trenton Wood-Keshick at 2:05.
“Tonight we had nine healthy varsity players and a lot of jayvee kids playing,” said Norway coach Scott Popp. “Our school is down to 190 students. Our numbers are really down, but the kids wanted to have fun. We had fun in the second half.”
The Knights (0-3 overall, 0-2 Iron) got on the board midway through the third stanza when senior QB Gannon Bray scored on a 12-yard keeper around left end.
BR-H added a TD late in the third when Johnson broke through the middle for a 44-yard TD run and a 43-6 advantage.
Norway concluded the scoring with 3:14 left to play when senior Zachary Seat took a handoff from junior QB Nathaniel Nanney on dash 20 yards to his right on a reverse.
“Nate sees the field well,” said Popp. “He has a future, and our other quarterback (Bray) is a good runner. Our jayvee quarterback is also pretty good. Only, he got hurt last (Thursday) night.”
The Knights finished with 164 yards in total offense with Bray and Nanney combining on a 5-of-14 passing effort for 114. Bray was their leading rusher with 34 yards on five carries, and junior Nolan Amundson recovered a fumble.
“From watching film, we knew No. 4 was more of a deep threat,” said Stenberg. “The spread offense is not something we see all the time, but we were able to trap them most of the game. We turned the ball over a couple times in the second half, but we were subbing. That’s to be expected. We had a couple losses, so we needed this one. We have a lot of work to do before the playoffs.”
The Broncos travel to Manistique Friday. The Knights host Gwinn Friday.
