Steinmetz wins Jam Dam

WILSON — Tim Steinmetz of Gladstone became the top finisher in Sunday’s Jam Dam Scramble, running the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 21 minutes, four seconds.

Steinmetz, who grabbed the lead at four kilometers (2.4 miles) held off Nathan Pierce for the title. Pierce was clocked at 21:36, and Wes Papciak of Florence, Wis. was third (22:14).

“I just wanted to keep a steady pace and was going for four to 4 1/2 minutes per kilometer,” said Steinmetz. “I could hear him coming up behind me. Although at first, I didn’t know he was coming.”

Amber Hayward of Wilson topped the women in a personal-best 23:35, followed by Amanda Jandro (25:31) and Cindy Lucking (25:50).

“I had done a lot of hillwork this summer, and I try to think of it as running up a flight of stairs,” said Hayward. “It’s taking a lot of time off my average pace, and you use more of your quad muscles and takes some of the stress off your hamstring. This was a perfect day for running. I love fall running.”

Also running was eight-year-old Julia Richards of Wilson, who finished in 38:24.

The event, which drew 22 runners and walkers, was run under cloudy conditions with temperatures in the low 60s.
