Yonker named Northern Lights League Player of the Year

ESCANABA — Big Bay de Noc senior point guard Meagan Yonker was named the Northern Lights League Player of the Year by the league’s coaches recently after leading the Black Bears to a regular season league title and a conference tournament title in their first year in the league.

Yonker averaged 15.7 points, 4.3 steals, 3.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest for the Black Bears, who finished 15-3 overall and 14-0 in the NLL.

Also on the All-Conference first team from Big Bay is freshman guard Alix Bleau, who averaged 11 points per contest. The rest of the first team consists of Maplewood Baptist teammates Chloe May and Halie Miller and Mackinac Island’s Mabel Styburski.

Big Bay freshman Piper Jones was named to the second team. Joining her on the second team are Beaver Island teammates Elsie Burton and Skylar Marsh, Maplewood Baptist’s Lauren Mulder and Ojibwe Charter’s Chennoah Teeple.

Receiving honorable mention are Hannahville teammates Desirae Lattergrass and Annileece Lofquist and Mackinac Island’s Brooke Dziobak.
