Norse softball drops doubleheader
TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Bay College’s six-game winning streak came to an end here Thursday as it dropped both ends of a softball doubleheader to Spoon River (Ill.) College.
The Snappers took the opener 8-6 in nine innings and the nightcap 6-5.
Bay scored a run in the first inning and added three in the second on a double by Lexi Chaillier and singles by Kourey Kaukola and Kaitlyn Hardwick for a 4-0 advantage in the nightcap.
Guilla Cianfriglia got the Snappers on the board with a three-run homer in the fifth before Daisy Bejarano’s double tied the score.
The Norse regained the lead on Hardwick’s double in their half of the fifth.
Spoon River, however, tied the contest on Mackenzie Hodges’ double and scored the winning run on a bunt single by Tina Foglesong in the seventh.
The Norse led 2-0 early in the opener, but trimmed their deficit in half on Maddy Griffin’s single in the sixth.
Chaillier gave Bay a 5-2 lead on a grand slam home run in the seventh, but Spoon River (15-3) tied the contest on Foglesong’s infield double in the bottom half of the inning.
That marked the first of two times Norse pitcher Eden Oswald was within one strike of victory.
Oswald was facing a similar situation again in the ninth before Cianfriglia launched a game-winning two-run shot.
The Norse (7-7) were to end their Florida trip this morning with a contest against Chesapeake (Md.) College.
