Esky girls enter U.P. poll
ESCANABA — Three area teams moved up in the latest U.P. basketball poll released Monday, including the Escanaba girls, who snuck into the No. 5 spot in Division 1-3 to make their first poll appearance of the season.
The Eskymos (8-5) were idle last week but were rewarded after previously fourth-ranked Marquette lost three straight games and dropped out. Menominee is still unbeaten and ranked as the unanimous No. 1, followed by Westwood, Sault Ste. Marie and Negaunee.
Everything stood pat in Division 4, with the exception of Pickford switching spots with Baraga for the No. 3 spot. St. Ignace remained the unanimous No. 1, followed by Ewen-Trout Creek, Pickford, Baraga and North Dickinson.
In Division 1-3 boys, Escanaba (9-4) beat out Marquette by just one point for the No. 3 spot and its highest ranking of the season. Unbeaten Iron Mountain is still the unanimous No. 1, followed by Negaunee, Esky, Marquette and Westwood.
The Rapid River boys also moved up to No. 4 in Division 4. Dollar Bay is still unbeaten and the unanimous No. 1, followed by Pickford, Rudyard, Rapid River and Chassell. North Central dropped from No. 4 to unranked after losing at Munising 67-31 Friday.
