Brandt lifts Alma back to playoffs
KALAMAZOO — Escanaba’s Jeny Brandt was dominant for the Alma College women’s basketball team in a 70-58 win over Kalamazoo College Saturday. The win helped secure a postseason berth for the Scots for the second straight season.
Brandt — an All-U.P. Class ABC First Team selection at Escanaba in 2016-17 — led all players with 19 points and 17 rebounds, including six offensive boards. It was her seventh double-double of the year, third in her last five games, and the most rebounds she’s ever had in a collegiate game.
The Scots (12-13, 7-9 MIAA) pulled away from Kalamazoo by outscoring the Hornets 23-15 in the fourth quarter. Alma shot 54% in the last 10 minutes and held Kalamazoo to 26% from the field. Brandt scored seven points and made all three of her shots.
The Scots will face Calvin College in the first round of the MIAA Tournament Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Grand Rapids.
