GARDEN CORNERS — Big Bay de Noc split with Ojibwe Charter at home Thursday, with the girls basketball team pulling out a 68-33 victory and the boys falling 50-35 in a pair of Northern Lights League contests.

The Black Bears girls (11-2) pulled ahead 21-9 after the first quarter thanks to eight points from Alix Bleau and seven from Meagan Yonker. They then rode that momentum through the rest of the game.

Big Bay’s defense was also tough, holding Ojibwe Charter to just 21 points through three quarters. The Black Bears held a 39-12 rebounding advantage and forced 32 turnovers.

The Black Bears were led by Yonker with 21, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Bleau notched 14 points and five steals, while Camryn Pederson finished with 10 points.

Amea Miller led Ojibwe Charter with 16 points and two triples.

The Big Bay boys (0-12) led 13-8 after the first quarter thanks to strong play from Brayden Willour and Travis Johnson.

However, Ojibwe Charter ratcheted up its pressure on both sides of the court, outscoring the Black Bears 12-3 in the second quarter to take a 20-16 halftime lead, and the Black Bears couldn’t recover in the second half.

Johnson led Big Bay with 17 points and Willour added 11.

Pau Rosello led Ojibwe Charter with 18 points. James Adkins followed with 13 and Marquis Harmon chipped in 11.
