Esky icers drop sixth straight
CHELSEA — Three first-period goals weren’t enough for the Escanaba hockey team in a 4-3 loss to Davison on the first day of the Chelsea Showcase Thursday.
The Eskymos (8-10), losers of six straight, got on the board first when Ethan Silverstone scored on assists from Luke Labre and Kyle Krutina seven minutes into the first period.
Davison, however, answered 30 seconds later to knot the score 1-1.
Esky regained the lead two minutes later when Nick Kolich fired in a one-timer on assists from Sawyer LaMarch and Braden Reinhart.
Davison scored again with 1:41 left in the period to even the score, but Karson Krutina’s unassisted goal with 57 seconds left put the Eskymos up 3-2 at the end of the first.
“We played very good at times and thought we were going to be able to pull through,” Esky coach Matt Hughes said. “We’re on a six-game losing streak right now so we need to battle and get a W.”
Davison scored the equalizer in the second and the game-winner two minutes into the third as the Eskymos were unable to get on the board the rest of the way.
“We played them hard in the third period, we just couldn’t find a way to score,” Hughes said. “We pulled our goaltender (Trevor Denome) with about 1:30 left and put a lot of pressure on them, we just couldn’t put it past their goalie. We put a lot of pressure on him, we just couldn’t get it by him. He seemed to get better as the game went on.”
Esky was to resume against Wyandotte Roosevelt in the same showcase this morning at 9:30.
