Bay men win in OT

BATTLE CREEK — Sophomore Ryan Robinette scored 28 points and freshman Matt Wagner added 23 here Saturday as the Bay College men earned a 95-87 overtime basketball victory over Kellogg Community College.

Wagner hit 7-of-10 three-point shots and Robinette was 5-of-10 from beyond the arc for the Norse, who dropped a 70-68 overtime decision at Grand Rapids Community College Friday night.

The Norse (1-2) led 38-32 at halftime Saturday.

“I was happy with the way we started the game,” said Bay coach Matt Johnson. “It was our goal to come out and land the first punch. I think it was important for the psyche of our group to jump on them early after the tough loss the night before. We defenitely still have a long way to go and an awful lot to improve on, but we had guys step up, hit shots and make plays down the stretch period. Overall, I am happy with the effort and glad we could do enough to grit one out to get the split this weekend.”

Chris Dobessi added 12 points for Bay, which hit 5-of-7 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws in overtime.

The Norse had a chance to win this one in regulation, but a 17-foot jump shot by Robinette dropped off the back of the rim to force overtime.

Robinette also collected eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Wagner finished with 23 points.

Tahveaur Boykins led the Bruins with 20 points. Larry Patrick added 16 points and 13 boards and Jamari Thomas-Newell had 13 points.

The Norse resume at Rochester, Minn. Community College Friday, then visit Western Tech at LaCrosse, Wis. Saturday.
