Indians win pair, advance to semis

GLADWIN, Mich. — Jake Rogers stayed ahead of the hitters for the most part here Thursday, helping the Gladstone Indians blank the Gladwin Lightning 10-0 in the second round of the Class A American Legion state baseball tournament.

The Indians, who meet Trenton today at 5:30 in a semifinal contest, beat Hudson 14-8 in Thursday’s opener.

Rogers fired a two-hitter, struck out six and walked two in the nightcap, which was decided in five innings.

“Jake threw very well,” said Gladstone manager Justin Jurek. “He was getting ahead in the count against most hitters. He absolutely kept them off balance.”

Dan Martin, Jared Crow and Blake Krouth ripped two-run doubles for the Indians, who didn’t commit any errors.

“Our bats came alive today for sure,” said Jurek. “All of our starters scored a run. We had some very clutch situational hitting. We scored three runs in the first, which I think gave us some momentum on defense. We were able to play more comfortably. We’re playing our best ball at the right time.”

Caden Alworden had two hits and scored two runs against Hudson. Martin added a two-run double and scored twice. Ian Schwalbach had a two-run double and scored two runs and Ben Kelly had a two-run single.

“Our hitting was pretty spread out throughout the lineup,” said Jurek. “Seven of our starters scored a run in the first game.”

Gladstone led 9-0 through two innings and 12-3 after the third.
