Indians upended by Neenah in Wisconsin

ANTIGO, Wis. — Not much went right for the Gladstone Indians in their opener of the Antigo tournament here Friday evening. The Indians fell to Neenah, Wis. 5-3 in American Legion baseball action, due mostly to a lethargic start.

Neenah led just 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but added two more runs there and one in the sixth to make it 5-0 entering the final frame.

“I don’t know if it was the drive down or what but we didn’t have much energy through the first five innings,” Indians’ manager Justin Jurek said. “That’s kind of what killed us.”

The Indians (6-4) responded with a rally in the seventh, scoring three times to pull within 5-3. But Ean Dawson struck out swinging and Ben Kelly grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to end the game.

“I think we were kind of hitting the panic button a little bit and realized we only had three more outs and were in the middle of a game,” Jurek said. “We need more energy and more focus. I don’t think we were very focused or really wanted to be there.”

Carson Shea and Jared Crow led the offense with a hit and an RBI each. Kelly took the loss on the mound through six innings, surrendering five runs (four earned) on 10 hits while walking three and striking out six.

“I think Ben threw really well,” Jurek said. “He was all over the zone, which was good. They were just hitting gaps. Every ball they hit hard fell.”

The Indians resume play in the Antigo tournament today, taking on Ashwaubenon, Wis. at 6 p.m. EDT and host Antigo, Wis. at 8:30. The Indians then wrap up the tournament against Marquette Sunday at 1.
