MANISTIQUE — Mark Calhoun and Allie Nagy had the pleasure of winning their hometown races in Saturday’s Manistique Paper Chase Run.

Calhoun topped the field in the 10-kilometer race, covering the 6.2-mile course in 38 minutes, 19.7 seconds. He was followed by Greg Ryan of Sherwood, Wis. (40:25.3) and Cory Case of Manistique (44:25.4).

“After looking at last year’s times, I knew what I had to do to be competitive,” said Calhoun. “I wanted to go out a little strong and I was able to get into a rhythm. It was a little hot out there, but a great race day.”

Nagy topped the women’s 5-K at 22:57.7, followed by Maya Carlson (23:15.9) and Meg Espinoza (23:54.9), both of Manistique.

Riley Hough of Fenton, Mich. was the overall 5-K winner in 17:08.2, followed by Seth Helman of Houghton (17:50.1) and Levi Robinson of Willard, Oh. (17:54).

“I didn’t really have a strategy,” said Hough, who’s entering his freshman year at Hartland High School. “I just go out and have fun. I got into a rhythm right away and everything felt right. For me, this is perfect weather. The breeze off the lake felt good, especially near the end of the race.”

Karen Nelson of Gwinn copped the women’s 10-K at 48:29.7. She was followed by Kris Gould of Denver (49:54.8) and Dana Pelkola of Gwinn (50:35.3).

“I wanted to get under 50, so I was pretty happy with my time,” said Nelson. “The temperature was a little warm, but the breeze off Lake Michigan really helped. I truly enjoyed the race. The people were very helpful and friendly. I’ll be back.”

More than 280 people participated in the races, which were held under sunny and breezy conditions with temperatures near 70.
