Bay softball falls to Bucs

ROSEMOUNT, MINN. — Bay College Softball fell to the Dawson Community College Buccaneers 5-4 in the Region 13 Early Bird tournament here Thursday.

After a wild pitch and a stolen base, the Bucs were first on the board. The Norse couldn’t respond until the bottom of the second.

Bay College (8-3) tied the score on a two-out single from Beth Gannigan. A liner to left from Maddie Griffin (Escanaba) drove in a run from first to give the Norse the lead. A bunt from Emily Bruntjens (Escanaba) brought Griffin home to give Bay a 3-1 cushion.

After stealing a run in the third, a sacrifice fly sent Dawson’s April Davis across the plate to tie it at 3 in the fourth.

The Norse regained the lead in the fifth on a fly ball from Kaitlyn Hardwick (Gladstone). However, Ashlyn Tingey tied it for Dawson (13-2) at 4 with a solo home run. Davis crossed the plate again on a double to center.

Bay loaded the bases with two out in the sixth and drew a one-out walk in the seventh, but couldn’t capitalize.

Lexi Winling (Gladstone) took the loss, giving up seven hits and three walks in seven innings. She had four strike-outs, and three of the five runs were earned.

The Norse take on Lake Region State (N.D.) today at 11 a.m. and have a rematch with Dawson at 1 p.m. Both games take place in Rosemount.
