Esky’s Worthen takes 3rd at boys U.P. bowling finals

MARQUETTE — Josh Worthen of Escanaba came in third in the boys bowling singles U.P. finals here Saturday.

He finished the day with 1,061 over six games.

Following Worthen was James Peacock in sixth place with 1,029 and Hunter Lancour in 14th with 995.

Worthen and Lancour faced each other in the very first round, with Worthen pulling out a narrow 357-356 victory.

Alex Miller of Westwood defeated Peacock in the first round and Worthen in the second.

Other Escanaba finishers were Tony Liss in 26th, Troy Delvaux in 30th, Gunnar Dlugas in 34th, Shaun Beauchamp in 35th, Shamus Mold in 38th, Matt Cordy in 40th, Joey Kositzky in 47th, Eastin Young in 50th, Tyler Teal in 51st, Gaven Erickson in 53rd, and Lucius Padaoan in 54th.

Tech quints split

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team fell 82-74 in GLIAC here Saturday at Parkside. The Huskies faced a 15-point deficit at the break before mounting a late rally in the final minutes.

It was a slow start offensively for both the Huskies (10-10, 5-8 GLIAC) and Parkside and the game remained scoreless until the 17:42 mark when the Ranger’s Brandon Hau scored.

The Rangers (11-8, 9-4 GLIAC) led at halftime 38-23.

Tech’s Dawson Bilski of North Central High School brought the score down to single digits for the first time since the opening half to make it 61-52 with 7:21 to play.

A triple and layup by the Huskies Bryan Heath cut the gap to 78-73 with 37 seconds left, but Parkside’s Ramar Evans hit two free throws to seal the win.

TeeAaron Powell led the Huskies with a career high 27 points, Bilski had 15 and a team-high seven rebounds, and Bryan Heath added 12 points.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team engineered a 60-47 GLIAC win Saturday. The Huskies (14-7, 10-3 GLIAC) outpaced the Rangers 18-9 in the final period and recorded 30 points in the paint.

Michigan Tech led 28-24 at the half.

The Rangers (8-11, 6-7 GLIAC) couldn’t come any closer than a nine-point deficit in the last quarter after an 8-0 run by the Huskies.

Tech’s Elizabeth Kelliher, Ellie Mackay, and Cassidy Trotter each had 17 points apiece.

NMU quints sweep

WESTVILLE, Ind. — The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team (15-6 overall, 10-3 GLIAC) defeated Purdue Northwest 44-40 in a GLIAC match-up here Saturday.

PNW (2-17 overall, 0-13 GLIAC) took an early lead in the first quarter, but the rest of the first half was neck and neck, ending at 25-25.

The Pride were within two points with four minutes, 14 seconds left in the contest, but the Wildcats’ Jessica Schultz and Darby Youngstrom scored the final five points to put them ahead.

Schultz led the Wildcats with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Youngstrom added eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds.

The NMU men also beat PNW (6-15 overall, 2-11 GLIAC) 86-74.

The Wildcats’ Kenton Mack’s two free throws and a dunk from the Pride in the last 50 seconds of the first half which enable NMU (12-8 overall, 7-6 GLIAC) go up 48-38.

NMU kept its defense tight for the rest of the game and never had less than a four-point lead.

Naba Echols and Isaiah Johnson both led the Wildcats with 20 points each. Troy Summers added a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds and Alec Fruin scored a career-best 17 points.

NMU icers split

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University Men’s Ice Hockey (14-13-0, 12-7-0-0 WCHA) fell to No. 13 Bowling Green State University (18-8-3, 13-6-2-2 WCHA) 3-2 in overtime Friday and won Saturday to salvage a split.

A goal by NMU’s Troy Loggins early in the third period tied the game at 2 to send the contest to overtime.

This marked the first overtime contest for the Wildcats since the WCHA semifinals last season.

It took just 17 seconds for BGSU to find the back of the net and secure the win.

NMU scored three goals in the first period and held on for a 3-2 victory Saturday.

The Wildcats outshot the Falcons 10-8 in the first period and led 3-1.

Senior goaltender Atte Tolvanen finished with 26 saves and now has 3,190 saves in his career. He is 23 saves away from fourth place in NMU history.
