Cuts would be severe blow for library

EDITOR:

It has come to my attention that the city council of Escanaba will be deliberating a proposed budget cut of 40% for the Escanaba Public Library. A budget cut at this time, with a struggling economy and the remaining effects of the pandemic, would be a severe blow to the educational and informational resources of the city. A reduction of the size proposed would be devastating to the library and the citizens of the city.

Over the past years, Escanaba has seen bookstores close for business reasons and the options for students and citizens to obtain and read books have been substantially reduced. The library has a long and proud record of providing library services to city residents and people in our area. This includes students, families, elderly people, and readers of books of various types and subjects. Our community is better for the interest, enthusiasm and knowledge provided to the many users of the library and its services.

If the council, after study and consideration, decides budget cuts must be made, cutting the public benefits of the library should be far down the list, and all other options considered, including raising taxes to provide the necessary funding. The library is for the benefit of all citizens, regardless of age or means, and provides to all the benefits of knowledge, pleasure, information, and skills. It is historically and presently one of our most important and cherished institutions. It would be tragic and harmful to our community if such reductions in city support were taken.
