Enbridge patrol vessels

EDITOR:

Enbridge is committed to keeping the community and the Straits safe while we provide essential transportation fuel and propane to Michigan and the region.

In line with that commitment, we recently announced three new measures to increase safeguards and further reduce the risk of an anchor strike in the Straits. One of these safety measures is deployment of patrol vessels.

The patrol vessels monitor ships in the Straits. They confirm the ship anchors are stowed crossing the Straits, and that ships are moving at the appropriate speed.

Since mid-October, we have had two vessels on the water during the day. On November 21, the vessels began 24/7 observations.

The patrol vessels complement the high-resolution cameras and the vessel communication system we will also be implementing in the coming months. These measures are near-term solutions to enhancing safety within the Straits while we continue to focus on the best long-term solution; the Great Lakes Tunnel.

Construction of a tunnel 100 feet below the lakebed to house a new Line 5 is the best solution as it eliminates the chance of an anchor strike.

We will invest $500 million to build the tunnel, because we believe it is the best way to protect the environment while ensuring families and businesses can continue to receive the energy that Line 5 safely delivers each day.

We look forward to honoring our commitment to residents and the State and doing our part to advance Michigan’s energy security.
