Mathew Mattson

Mathew Mattson, age 97, of Mayville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 2, 2025, at his home in Mayville.

A Funeral Service for Mathew will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at the Koepsell Funeral Home in Mayville with Rev. Fr. Zachary Galante presiding. A visitation for Mathew will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mayville.

Mathew was born the son of Carl and Josephine (Thomma) Mattson on January 8, 1928. He attended Escanaba High School. Mathew was united in marriage to Mary B. Collegnon on July 2, 1949, at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba, Michigan.

Mathew was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1946-1947. He was a machinist at Mayville Engineering Company (MEC) for 26 years and later retired.

Mathew’s love of the outdoors was evident in his many hobbies. He deeply loved spending time with his family at his hunting camp in Cornell, Michigan. Mathew was a member of Field and Stream and enjoyed ice fishing, deer hunting, and woodworking. He was an avid Packer Fan. Mathew also looked forward to picking blueberries every year and sampling some before they even made it home.

Mathew was blessed with a large family and enjoyed every moment that they could be together. The love and memories they shared will continue to live on.

Mathew is survived by his children: James (Sharon) Mattson, Timothy (Janice) Mattson, Catherine Braun, Sandra (Jeff Bradley) Bodden, Mary (Grant) Larson; his grandchildren: Darlene Shuck, Andrew Mattson, Amy Banaszak, Kimberly (Jeremy) Hayden, Sara Braun, Susan Crout, Michael (Kaitlin) Braun, John Braun, Jessica (DeWayne) Schantzen, Douglas (Becky Chanto) Bodden, Rebecca (Travis) Casper, Scott Larson, Kate (Matt) Kopp, and Lynn Larson; 11 great- grandchildren; and 1 great-great- grandson; one sister Violet Collegnon; and sister-in-law Inez Mattson. Mathew is further survived and deeply missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mathew was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary in 2020; his son-in-law Dennis Braun; his brothers: Carl Mattson and Willard Mattson; his sisters: Lillian Carlson, Irene Johnson, Virginia Swanson, Lavina Swanson, Isabel Anderson, Victoria Whitney, and Helen Noel.

Mathew’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to his granddaughter Rebecca Casper and Amanda at SSM Hospice for all of their care to Dad.
