Margit Viola Erickson

GLADSTONE — Margit Viola Erickson, 98 years old, of Gladstone, finally heard the words “well done, my good and faithful servant” on Thanksgiving morning November 26, 2020 and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by family. Margit always put Christ first, family and friends second, and herself last.

Margit was born July 18, 1922 and immigrated to Gladstone from Overmark, Finland, at the age of two with her parents, John and Amanda Sigg and two older sisters who were born in the United States. She grew up and raised her four children in the Gladstone “Buckeye addition”.

She married Harry E. Erickson on August 3, 1948 and he preceded her in death in February of 2001.

Margit was a long-standing member of Bethel Free Church in Gladstone for many years where she was involved in Sunday School and women’s activities.

Mom was very devoted to her family and grandchildren. In earlier years, enjoying quality time with family, playing card games, board games and preparing homemade meals for everyone. She was a joy to be around and was always looking at life optimistically, enjoying the simpler things in life. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Margit was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Kristine and son-in-law, Paul (Grandpa Camo) Gerard, and sisters Aili Demary, Sylvia Smith, and Erna Sigan and their husbands.

Margit is survived by the daughter of the late Kristine (Paul) Gerard, Rachael (Steve) Barnhart and family of Houghton, Michigan.

Her sons: Harry (Sue) Erickson and children: Andy (Jenny) Erickson and Jenny (Gordon) Erickson and their families all of Marquette, Michigan. Jerry (Rita) Erickson of Rapid River, Michigan and their children: Jamie (Heike) Erickson and family from Smithfield Virginia. Audree (Brandon) Orna and family of Castle Rock, Colorado. Margit and husband Harry leave behind a legacy of ten grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.

The family would also like to thank the Bishop Noa Home administration and staff for many years of outstanding care, along with Dr Mary Witmer and Kay Nault of Gladstone, her devoted senior companion.

Margit will be laid to rest at the Fernwood Cemetery of Gladstone on Friday, December 4, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jon Potes officiating.
