ESCANABA — A new PetSmart is slated to open at the Delta Plaza Mall in Escanaba after reconstruction now underway is completed.

The nearest locations for the pet supply retail giant — headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz. — are Marquette and Green Bay. Pet owners shopping in the Escanaba area are currently served by Mel’s Lawn, Garden & Feed Center; Tractor Supply; Meijer; Walmart; and others. Iron Mountain hosts a Pet Supplies Plus, and Marquette has Mares-Z-Doats.

In September, PetSmart LLC entered into a lease agreement with the landlord, listed as Dial Escanaba Mall 1 Limited Partnership. The lease is for an initial term of 10 years, with PetSmart given the option to extend the lease for five-year periods up to four times.

Dial Companies is the parent company that purchased the mall property in 2016 and appointed its subsidiary, DP Management LLC, to manage operations.

The demolition and remodeling currently taking place between Five Below and Shoe Sensation is the latest in a long line of changes at the Delta Plaza, which has evolved over the years to feature more exterior-facing stores, accessed by doors that lead directly outside, as opposed to traditional interior mall entrances. The new conversion will create a space for PetSmart where Glik’s and Christopher & Banks used to be, in addition to incorporating some neighboring space.

Many PetSmart locations offer grooming services within, and some provide training, boarding and even veterinary services, though it is not publicly known how extensive the Escanaba location will be in what it offers.

An opening date for the incoming PetSmart has not yet been announced.

Current tenants of the Escanaba mall at 301 N. Lincoln Road include Marshalls, Harbor Freight, Shoe Sensation, Five Below, Maurices, Dunham’s Sports, Wellspring Community Church and Hobby Lobby.
