COVID-19 cases continue to increase in U.P., locally

ESCANABA — Area COVID-19 numbers continue to creep up, with local data Wednesday showing Delta County with 48 new confirmed COVID-19 positives and Menominee County 29 since May 11.

Delta County also had 33 probable cases and Menominee County four probables in the week’s span, according to figures listed on the Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties website Wednesday. Neither county had a new death blamed on the virus.

The PHDM website Wednesday had Delta County at 8,028 confirmed positives, 2,136 probable cases and 157 deaths since the pandemic began. Menominee County has had 4,022 confirmed positives, 1,724 probables and 64 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.

On the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday added 517 confirmed positives to the Upper Peninsula’s tally since May 11: 188 in Marquette County, 57 in Houghton County, 55 in Chippewa County, 52 in Delta County, 34 in Mackinac County, 32 in Menominee County, 26 in Gogebic County, 23 in Dickinson County, 12 in Iron County, nine in Baraga and Keweenaw counties, seven in Ontonagon County, five in Schoolcraft and Alger counties, and three in Luce County.

The only virus-related death the state recorded in the Upper Peninsula for the week came in Iron County .

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 52,900 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 840 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 477 confirmed cases and 55 probable, and 13 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 669 confirmed cases and 793 probable, 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 907 confirmed, 108 probable and 35 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,070 confirmed, 672 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,090 confirmed cases and 696 probable, 13 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,657 confirmed cases and 864 probable, 28 deaths and three probable; Baraga County, 1,741 confirmed cases, 322 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,349 confirmed cases and 338 probable, 71 deaths and 16 probable; Gogebic County, 2,797 confirmed cases and 531 probable, 40 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,605 confirmed cases and 5,231 probable, and 87 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,013 confirmed cases, 1,718 probable and 60 deaths, 10 probable; Dickinson County, 5,088 confirmed cases and 2,448 probable, 88 deaths and 22 probable; Houghton County, 6,924 confirmed cases, 1,118 probable, 81 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 8,015 confirmed cases and 2,125 probable, 133 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 12,498 confirmed cases, 3,169 probable and 120 deaths, 10 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday had 29,267 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since May 11, or an average of 4,181 per day for the week’s span, for a total of 2,501,863 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for the week added 78 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 36,218.
