Local virus activity waning

ESCANABA — Local COVID-19 data Friday continues to show a low level of virus activity in the area, with Delta County again adding only six confirmed positives and Menominee County two since Wednesday.

Neither county had a new death blamed on the virus, according to the Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties website Friday. Menominee County had two probable virus cases in the two-day period, Delta County none.

The PHDM on Friday had Delta County at 7,855 confirmed positives, 2,048 probable cases and 153 deaths since the pandemic began. Menominee County has had 3,862 confirmed positives, 1,691 probables and 63 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.

At the state level, figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Friday indicated 69 new confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Wednesday: 17 in Marquette County, nine in Dickinson County, eight in Chippewa County, six each in Delta and Iron counties, five in Gogebic County, four each in Mackinac and Luce counties, three each in Menominee and Alger counties, two in Baraga County and one each in Houghton and Ontonagon counties. The state listed one more virus-related death in both Schoolcraft and Gogebic counties.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 50,800 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 802 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County at 451 confirmed cases and 53 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 653 confirmed cases and 766 probable, eight confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 867 confirmed, 104 probable and 34 deaths, two probable; Alger County, 1,038 confirmed, 660 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,075 confirmed cases and 670 probable, 12 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,528 confirmed cases and 840 probable, 26 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,702 confirmed cases, 318 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,297 confirmed cases and 339 probable, 69 deaths and 16 probable; Gogebic County, 2,717 confirmed cases and 524 probable, 39 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,349 confirmed cases and 5,037 probable, and 80 deaths, 16 probable; Menominee County, 3,858 confirmed cases, 1,688 probable and 60 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,976 confirmed cases and 2,380 probable, 85 deaths and 21 probable; Houghton County, 6,624 confirmed cases, 1,078 probable, 78 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,846 confirmed cases and 2,042 probable, 129 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 11,819 confirmed cases, 3,023 probable and 111 deaths, 10 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Friday had 1,842 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of 921 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 2,060,698. The state since Wednesday added 68 deaths attributed to the virus — including 54 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 32,118.
