Grant to improve local recycling effort

ESCANABA — The Delta Solid Waste Management Authority (DSWMA) has received a grant from Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to improving recycling, and allow Delta County residents to recycle more materials. The grant is for $600,000, and DSWMA is required to spend matching funds of $164,016. for a total of $764,016.

DSWMA Board members say they effort. Cheryl Ohman, Lakestate Industries executive director, also also said she supports the effort.

“Lakestate Industries has played an integral part in the recycling process for almost 30 years in Delta County, and we will continue to assist with the new and improved process and look forward to the new partnership with Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority,” she said.

The plan is for a regional cooperation between DSWMA and Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority (MCSWMA). Both will collect recycle material, then DSWMA will transport to MCSWMA for final processing. DSWMA will continue to process recycling loads of metal and corrugated cardboard in Escanaba. Major expenses of the plan will include the purchase of two transport trailers, a semi-tractor to pull the trailers, modifications to the recycle conveyor, and an electronic machine to locate metal objects in the recycle stream.
