ESCANABA — A south side apartment building sustained minor damage after a fire in its basement, Escanaba Public Safety officers said.

Officers were called to 2711 5th Ave. S. about 3:58 p.m. Sunday after residents were alerted to the blaze by a smoke detector. Smoke was filling the building’s basement, which included eight apartments. Upon arrival, officers entered the building’s basement to find an electric dryer was on fire. Officers quickly put out the fire and checked the surrounding area. The building sustained minor smoke and water damage. There were no injuries.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by DTE, Escanaba Electric Department, and the Delta County Central Dispatch Center.
