Teacher who wrote profile resigns

ROCK — A Mid Peninsula School educator who wrote an offensive description of a student featured as a recent Student of the Week in the Daily Press has resigned, according to school officials.

“In regards to the teacher who submitted the inappropriate student of the week write up, that individual is no longer employed with the district. We are proud of all of our students and have taken the appropriate actions to ensure this will not happen again,” Mid Peninsula School District Superintendent Eric VanDamme said in a statement sent to the Daily Press Thursday.

J.J. Spaulding, an English teacher for the district, had submitted profiles about students honored as the school’s Student of the Week for many years prior to the inappropriate submission that prompted his resignation.

The profile was inadvertently published in the Saturday, Feb. 27 issue of the paper. The Daily Press published a written apology for its role in the incident Tuesday, has reached out to the student’s family, and has been working with the district to ensure future student profiles celebrate students, as is the intention of the weekly feature.

An updated profile of the student will appear in Saturday’s edition of the Daily Press.
