Road worker hit, killed by pickup truck

BATES TOWNSHIP — An Iron County Road Commission employee was struck and killed Wednesday while he was working in a construction zone.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police, Iron Mountain Post, responded to a two-vehicle personal injury crash on January 13, 2021, at approximately 2:14 p.m. on Bates-Amasa Road near Shady Lane, in Iron County’s Bates Township.

The investigation determined that a 57-year-old male from Newald, Wis., operating a 2005 Ford Ranger pickup, failed to stop in a marked work zone, striking an Iron County Road Commission employee performing duties as a flagger. The road commission employee was pinned between the driver’s vehicle and the road commission vehicle next to the employee, and suffered fatal injuries.

The driver of the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River. He was later airlifted to Wausau, Wis. for further treatment of his injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

The investigation is ongoing. The names of the victim and driver are pending notification of next of kin.

Assisting at the scene was Iron County Sheriff Department, West Iron Fire Department, Aspirus EMS, Iron County Search and Rescue, and Iron County Victim Advocacy team.
