State sees 8,500 virus cases a day

ESCANABA — The State of Michigan reported Friday it is experiencing a surge of cases, pushing the state to rank 5th in highest number of cases and 4th in highest number of deaths over the past seven days.

Friday’s daily case count represented new referrals made since Wednesday, Nov. 25 of confirmed cases to the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). Over the two days, Thursday and Friday, the average number of new confirmed cases was 8,581 per day.

As of Friday, the U.P. had 11,577 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 2,001 probable cases, 215 deaths and 36 probable deaths linked to the disease, according to state officials.

The figure does not include prisoners in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

According to the state’s county-by-county count issued Friday, Delta County had a total of 2,165 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 239 probable cases, 48 deaths and 10 probable deaths; Menominee County had 1,158 confirmed cases, 129 probable cases, and 16 deaths; Schoolcraft County had 161 confirmed cases, 11 probable cases, one death and one probable death.

The LMAS District Health Department, which serves Schoolcraft County has reported 447 recovered cases or probable cases, as of Thursday. However, more recoveries are possible, as the LMAS Health District only reports their cases weekly.

Elsewhere in the peninsula, Alger County had 148 confirmed cases, 74 probable cases, one death and one probable death; Baraga County had 416 confirmed cases, 57 probable cases, and 12 deaths; Chippewa County had 333 confirmed cases, 452 probable cases, and five deaths; Dickinson County had 1,585 confirmed cases, 90 probable cases, 39 deaths and five probable deaths; Gogebic County had 561 confirmed cases, 200 probable cases, 11 deaths and 12 probable deaths; Houghton County had 1,214 confirmed cases, 258 probable cases, 11 deaths and two probable deaths; Iron County had 674 confirmed cases, 36 probable cases, 29 deaths and four probable deaths; Keweenaw County had 56 confirmed cases, 11 probable cases, and one death; Luce County had 117 confirmed cases, and 49 probable cases; Mackinac County had 206 confirmed cases, and 71 probable cases; Marquette County had 2,507 confirmed cases, 298 probable cases, and 29 deaths; and Ontonagon County had 249 confirmed cases, 26 probable cases, 12 deaths and one probable death.

The state does not include infections or deaths within the Michigan Department of Corrections system in county-by-county counts, however, as of Thursday, the MDOC had 11,646 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 81 deaths statewide according to state officials. Of those cases, 236 were active infections.

In the U.P., Alger Correctional Facility has had 99 confirmed cases, 29 of which are currently active infections and 11 confirmed staff; Baraga Correctional Facility has had 8 confirmed cases, with 1 active infection and 45 confirmed staff; Chippewa Correctional Facility has had 186 confirmed cases, 65 of which were active and 27 confirmed staff; Kinross Correctional Facility has had 931 confirmed cases, 921 of which are active and 68 confirmed staff; Marquette Correctional Facility has had 845 confirmed case, 14 of which are active and 68 confirmed staff; and Newberry Facility has had 739 confirmed cases, 275 of which are active and 57 confirmed staff.
