Remembering veterans

Ilsa Minor | Daily Press

Above, pennies sit atop the grave of Robert J. “Bud” Peltier at Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. Peltier, who served in the Navy on a ship in the Pacific during World War II, died last year at the age of 92. The pennies on Peltier’s grave are part of a tradition among service men and women and signify they have visited the grave. Higher denominations have different meanings, with nickels indicating the visitor trained at boot camp with the deceased, dimes meaning the visitor served with the deceased in some capacity, and quarters indicating the visitor was with the person when they died. Unlike Memorial Day, which specifically honors servicemen and women who have died, Veterans Day is a day to remember all who have served.

Starting at $3.50/week.
